Dean Road Chapel Ltd (DRC) is a not for profit company and a registered charity working in partnership with several local organisations to restore Dean Road Chapel and bring it back into use for the benefit of the local community. The owners of the building (Scarborough Borough Council) have agreed to transfer the freehold of the building to DRC when funding for the restoration has been secured. DRC has a very successful working partnership with the Friends of Dean Road and Manor Road Cemetery.

During 2018 DRC spent a great deal of time and effort in preparing and submitting a Grant Application to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the complete restoration of Dean Road Chapel. We have always known that this application process would be very competitive. Unfortunately, we were not successful on this occasion but we were given the opportunity for a Review Meeting with HLF. This took place on January 14th 2019, where we received more detail regarding the merits and challenges of our Application.

We scored very well in the areas of heritage and conservation, where it was recognised that the Chapel is in need of restoration as it is in an ‘at risk’ area. HLF complimented us on our Activity Plan and the amount of partnered funding we had raised. They felt our Management and Maintenance Plan was a good document and our Project Costs were reasonable. However, HLF had concerns about the delivery and sustainability of the project. They felt that we did not have the support of a larger organisation that could be used as a platform, and that our income streams could not be guaranteed and sustained.

Although we were not successful on this occasion HLF suggested other opportunities and grant funds that are available. We have already started to investigate these opportunities with the intention of initially reviewing the project, in order that we can submit another grant application as soon as possible to commence work on restoring the Chapel.

We are very grateful for all of the support we have received.
