The members of Whitby Beach Sweep held their second Sweep on the morning of Tuesday 13th March. The group are holding their sweeps on different days of the week to allow everyone the opportunity of joining in. This time Year 2’s from West Cliff Primary School joined the public sweep. 30 children donned bags and gloves and headed onto the beach in Whitby to help clear the rubbish. West Cliff is a beach school and they believe passionately that children should grow up with a respect for their environment and an awareness of how to care for themselves whilst they are at the beach.

Alongside the children around 30 adults turned out to do their part. Many headed down the zig zags and onto the cliff wall where most of the rubbish could be found. Many bags of waste and recycled materials were collected by Scarborough Borough Council at the end of the trail. Neil Trillo from Full of Beans served hot drinks after to warm the pickers up!

If you would like to join in, the beach sweeps are listed in the Totally Socially Column in the Whitby Gazette and also on Facebook where the group has a dedicated page called ‘Whitby Beach Sweep’. The group would welcome any other schools or groups who would like to join in. Please make contact with either Charlotte Angus via email [email protected] or directly via the Whitby Beach Sweep or Totally Socially pages on Facebook.
